Can Faith & Counselling Co-Exist?

Is this really the question to ask? Perhaps the question really ought to be "Why would they not be able co-exist"?

In order to explore this question further lets look at the how/what makes up our sense of identity in both worlds of Psychology and Faith.

In the world of psychology this is simply defined by Maslows Hierachy of Needs as Body & Mind (Physiological), Emotions (Social & Safety), Spiritual (Self Actualisation). The connection between them all is observable in CBT, Gestalt, Person Centred & Humanistic counselling theories. In addition the emerging world of Nutritional Psychiatry is recognising the body - mind connection even further.

In the world of Faith (Christianity) the Body, Mind, Emotions and Soul/Spirit are all recognised in the bible. Some key texts are "Be transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Romans 12:2). "Your whole spirit, soul & body" (1 Thess 5:23)

In Buddhism the body, mind and spirit are considered one entity (Rupa)

So it appears that actually the two worlds are not that far apart, why then the perceived conflict? I believe that the answer is in the word PERCEPTION. The definition of perception is 'the way sensory information is organised, interpreted and consciously experienced' So this takes in our experiences, the life rules/beliefs that we develop or are given to us, and the facts and evidence for something. Often our perception is not always accurate, ie if it conflicts with evidence, if the rules of life are developed out of negative experiences, or at an age where our brains are not sufficiently developed, or just FEAR.

How does this relate to our original question? Both the worlds of psychology & counselling aim to free us of the junk that stops us growing as human beings. So by their nature they are not at odds. It is only our life rules/beliefs, lack of facts, and experiences that create FEAR around both worlds.

Working with a therapist who is inclusive of faith based issues will aid you to readdress any unhelpful/faulty perceptions, FIND THE TRUTH & CLEAR THE JUNK!
